First!!!1!

As instructed by my English professor, I will be keeping a blog about Subliminal Messages for the semester. Even though this controversial tactic has been disproven in recent years, it caused quite a stir back in the 60's, when certain brands used it to feed people the desire to buy their products, some bands hid messages in their music and some movies included a plethora of words, pictures and ideas hidden in their content (Disney, I'm looking at you). Nowadays, this tactic is illegal in most countries when applied to people without their knowledge, but the self-improvement business has started using subliminal messages for everything from weight loss to self-confidence, and some artists still backmask things into their tracks. Backmasking is the practice of recording words and phrases into a record that are only heard when played backwards, more common and obvious in vinyl records (as it was easier to play it back than with CD's, for example). I will delve deeper into backmasking later on, but for now, I hope to learn something new and practice my English writing skills in the process. Max out.

PD: Mr Josh, you suggested we make a hobby out of this investigation. Are you condoning my illegal actions? If so, I must inform you that that is very wrong, especially from a figure of authority like you!
PDD: If you disapprove of the title of the blog, listen to Queen's Another One Bites the Dust backwards first.

  1. Hey! I really think your topic is one of the most interesting ones I’ve seen yet. I am not such an expert about this topic but I’m looking forward into learning more about it. However when I think about this topic there are some issues that come into my mind such as:

-How can we be sure that the subliminal message is really there and it is not just our imagination?

-Which is the purpose on adding subliminal messages to movies, songs, and other media?

-How come we are able to find subliminal messages if they are put in a way so that we can’t see them?

-What about television and radio ads, do they have subliminal messages too?

-And particularly about backmasking, who had the idea of playing the vinyl records and CDs backwards to see what happened?

I think that there ARE subliminal messages in some videos and music etc. but, at what point we are the ones who are looking out for them? Is it possible that they are just there by coincidence or a mistake?

I think it will be interesting if you compare and contrast the different techniques and/or content of subliminal messages back from 1960 to present day to see the different aspects companies are interested in us to unconsciously perceive. Also, you could discuss what companies have said in their defense when they are accused of having subliminal messages in their material. I wonder, have there been juridical cases involving subliminal messages?

I really am looking forward into learning about this controversial topic, good luck and I’ll be checking your blog soon! :)

  2. I also liked your topic, I think it is very interesting. I agree with Brenda, I think some subliminal messages are part of our imagination, we make things up because they look or sound alike to something unacceptable. Besides, why would someone who wants to send a subliminal message like "I want to smoke marijuana" go through the trouble of finding words that when played backwards would form that subliminal phrase. I would probably consider it subliminal if it was a sort of message against the government, or something like that. Your entry would be even better if you showed the subliminal messages you mentioned, like "Disney is watching you". I hope my comment will help you, cheers :)
